CHAPTER SEVEN
FELICIA
I woke to the sound of muffled pop music streaming through my closed bedroom door. I groaned and rolled over, shoving my face into one of my pillows. Annabelle worked out every morning before the sun came up and she was never quiet about it. Carmen and I hadnât needed to set our alarm clocks for years because Annabelle either woke us up with her music or she would blast into our rooms after she was done, throwing the door open and hollering at us that it was time to get ready for school.
Thank the gods she only did this during the week. On weekends she gave us a slight reprieve and did yoga in the morning instead of the variety of other exercise she did during the week. Our neighbors had complained numerous times, but eventually they stopped when Annabelle refused to stop, now I think they were just as used to it as Carmen and I were.
I lay in bed for a little longer, knowing that I needed to get up and start getting ready, but I was really tired this morning. Maybe it was the trauma from finding Liamâs body still catching up with me. Iâd never seen a dead body before, so that could be it.
And honestly, I was way more invested in finding out how he died than I wanted to be. I wondered, if I hadnât found him, if I would care this much. But, the fact of the matter was that I did find him and I couldnât get the sight of the limp corpse out of my head.
Today, there would still be officers scattered throughout the school, searching everything. So that was definitely going to be a distraction. Our room had been searched already, it was one of the first, since I had been the first on scene. So, at least I didnât have to stress about people going through my belongings, and we could put the magic bean thing behind us as well.
My door burst open and Carmen hurried into my room, hurling herself onto my teal bedspread. âI donât know why we donât just combine forces and make her stop this nonsense.â
I snuggled into my blanket a little more. âBecause itâs not nonsense,â I admitted. âMy mom does the same thing and has since she was younger than us. Itâs a Hunter thing.â I liked to workout too, just not first thing in the morning. I definitely didnât get the gene that was in both of my parents that made them early birds. I liked sleeping and was not a morning person.â
âI want to strangle her sometimes,â Carmen whined.
âI know. Me too.â
âIâll go make coffee.â
I sighed at the thought of my first sip. âOh, please do.â
Carmen sat up and then hopped off the bed. âAll right. But, you do need to get up if you want to get a spot in the showers and still be on time for first hour.â
âI know. Iâm getting up.â
The music continued to pulse through the apartment after Carmen left, shutting the door behind her.
